Being a gamers nowadays is not a simple task. People usually relate their gaming performance with their computer’s hardware. In more simple words a very big percentage of gamers believe that the better hardware a computer is equipped with, the better gaming performance the user will get.

True or not people believe it and they will always keep believing it. Therefore a gamer “needs” to get all the required components and peripherals. What about the display though? Does an especially designed for gaming monitor result in higher performance levels?

In order to understand why gaming monitors are preferred over the regular monitors we need to discuss a few terms:

  • Monitor Frequency
  • Response Rate
  • Monitor Panel

Those are the most important factor for gaming. High image resolution and a good aspect ratio are also important of course, but they are both something that you can find on any monitor.

Monitor Frequency:

Ever since 120Hz monitors were released there have been thousands of opinions if they’re better than the traditional60Hz monitors. Hertz (Hz) tell us how many times a monitor refreshes it’s image per second. So we can already see that the 120Hz monitors tend to refresh the amount of their images as twice as the 60Hz monitors. This results in a smoother experience while allowing the user’s eyes to be more relaxed at the same time.

It sounds great till now. On the other side though, there’s a big downside. 120Hz monitors will only produce a smoother image when combined with an accordingly powerful graphics card which is capable of rendering at least 120 frames per second (fps). If your GPU isn’t powerful enough then you will have a slightl lack of frames. Let’s assume your GPU outputs 60fps while your monitor runs at 120Hz. That’s the half of the total amount of frames needed to have a smooth image produced.

Monitor Panel:

When choosing a monitor you have to face the dilemma of which panel you should go for. There are to types of monitor panels, TN and IPS. Approximately the 90% if the monitors use TN panels since it’s a cheaper and older technology. TN panels have shorter response times (ms) as well. However there’s some noticable color shifting when viewing the screen from different angles. IPS monitors on the other side are more expensive (since they use a more recent technology) and more power consuming too. They have some great advantages though. First of all there’s a great color consistency even when viewing the screen from an angle of 90 degrees.

As we said before though, IPS monitors have a slower response time than the TN monitors and that could be an issue, especially when it comes down to gaming.  Hold on, you shouldn’t get your your hopes down as the most recent S-IPS (Super IPS) technology is here to take care of that problem, while giving IPS monitors much faster response times than before.

Response Time (Fast vs. Slow)

Response time is measured in milliseconds (ms). The lower response time the better, as higher response times result in producing motion blur around moving objects, making them unacceptable for rapidly moving images (that’s something we definitely not want in gaming).

What is the slowest “acceptable” response time for gaming?

Anything between 5 to 9 ms should be fine. But nothing more than 9ms.

The differences between gaming and regular monitors are obvious. Gaming monitors come with high refresh rates, since they are often combined with powerful graphics cards. As for the monitor panel, gaming monitors come equipped with both TN and IPS panels. It’s up to the customer to choose the most suitable one for his own needs. And finally, they all feature super low response time rates in order to deliver the smoothest possible image. So yes, gaming monitors are worth it after all.
